rganizations and even nations together in set of certain conditions and set of circumstances and rends them apart in another set of conditions and opposing set of circumstances. It is a the law of nature that first you have to dismantle the old structure before erecting a new and solid edifice in its place, so we can view the civil war as one such natural process which was essential for the American nationhood to develop and prosper. Taking into account all the insinuating positions and all the pros and cons it cannot be denied that , an incident or rather historical event of monumental importance, with its peculiar ramifications and consequences the civil war was psychologically and culturally able to jell a people together.

In due time each side realized to respect the diversity of other side, and though the winning side had the majority of the say in the future the losing side was also given ample space to manifest itself, because as I have noted above the struggle ultimately was for union, the only question to be decided was on whose terms. One can never disassociate history from psychology, especially cultural psychology. As the things stood the (pre-war) nation was culturally and psychologically divided into two equally rigid ideals or ideologies.

Many factors were responsible for this. The main being the clash of interests, at time in history when nationhood was in the process of taking shape the cultural psychological lines were blurred and the only interests predominant were regional and very limited by nature. What I had learned in the class seemed to make sense as I walked through metaphorically speaking history or fragmented moments in it. I realized the onus of the task. In the words cited in the text book: “Fear, rigidity, and sometimes stubborn pride…,” (2) play a very important role in defining the social or rather the cultural , more accurately cultural psychological constructs of a period in history.
