The bassist Chambers is attempting to keep to the roots of the music. He does so by stacking fourths, topped by a third over the D sounded by the double bass. The section has got a discernible melody. However, whatever he is playing does not sound written. Coltrane who begins his solo at 02:02 plays two choruses. Adderley and Evans only play one chorus each. Each soloist begins his/her solo using a similar stratification of texture. All these artists stay close to a single scale. This is mainly because the piece uses the scalar mode. This piece ends with a soft solo piano piece. Davis draws the piece to an end by creating space through his utilization of rests and held notes. The main characteristic of this piece is that it is a modal jazz. The difference it has from the bebop and other hard bop groups is the ballad improvisation of the opening.
