The Invention of Internet by Location of the The Invention of Internet: A Revolution in Communication Technology The internet is a chain of networks that interconnects computers all over the world (Gillet, 1995). Its use has become almost a basic necessity for every individual in the world. Its use has revolutionized almost every aspect of life including communication, finance, medicine, management and agriculture. Particularly, it has made communication fast, cheap, and efficient. Its impact on communication has earned it the term, the ‘superhighway’ of communication.

In this paper, I have chosen to talk about the invention of internet and how it has revolutionized the communication industry. The main motivation behind me choosing this topic is because I have realized that I use the internet to communicate to over ninety percent of my friends. Invention of the internet is a lengthy and convoluted process. This is because it keeps on changing with each passing day and in some cases, it involves a merger of inventions done by different experts. That is the reason why it is impossible to credit its invention on only one individual. U.S experts are the leading inventors of most of the items related to the internet.

It is widely thought that internet was first invented in 1969 as a result of a military research exercise in the U.S. The research exercise was commissioned by the U.S government and it led to the development of the first successful interconnection technology called the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET). The key scientists behind the establishment of the ARPANET were; Lawrence Roberts, Leonard Kleinrock, Paul Baran, and Donald Davies (Denning, 1989). The scientists behind development of ARPANET were inspired by J.C. R.

Licklider, who in 1962 had envisaged the possibility of developing a galactic network to link several global computers (Cohen-Almagor, 2011). Before finally inventing the internet, the major difficulty the scientists had to solve was to invent a technology that could enable communication between computers. The first step towards attaining this communication was when Kleinrock invented the packet switching technology which enabled communication to use packets instead of the conventional circuits.

In 1965, Roberts confirmed Kleinrock’s packet-switching technology when he successfully enabled computers to work to together using a switched circuit telephone system. As a result, in 1968, ARPA allowed Leinrock to develop his packet-switching technology for ARPANET. In 1969, the world’s first packet switching computer network technology was successfully tested by Kleinrock in the University of California. More and more computers got connected to the ARPANET. Since 1969, lots of advancements have been made to make internet more efficient.

Over the years, the internet has revolutionized many sectors; chief among them being the communication industry. Notably, it has made communication between people across different parts of the world to communicate with each other. This has made globalization possible (Block, 2004). Personally, I enjoy a lot of benefits from the internet. For example, I am a great fan of social media. I enjoy conversing with my friends over sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Furthermore, I find internet very useful when I have research work to do.

It enables me to easily access literature materials done by reputable scholars to back my arguments. It is apparent that the internet is not a product of one individual, but an effort of many scientists. Even though their invention was done over half a century ago, its relevance is still fresh. Indeed, it is arguable that nothing has revolutionized the world to the degree the internet has. It is the main driving force behind globalization, as well as the biggest source of information to most people.

Its ability to be incorporated into mobile devices such as tablets and mobile phones has made it possible to be accessed even in remote areas where other modes of communication cannot be accessed.
